The best dental crowns are the ones that fit nicely in your mouth. Color and texture-wise, it should be the same as the other teeth. A dental crown is made to last. Hence, you should not be satisfied with a frail crown. You need something that is strong and tough.

This is why I spend considerable time with each crown ahead of installation. My technicians work on every crown for several days. That is how long we require to build something that we hope won't let you down.

Before we give you a permanent crown, I need to make sure the tooth is cleaned of jagged edges, chips and stains. As I do, I need to scratch away some of the enamel that coats your tooth. This would render your tooth exposed to the possibility of germs, particularly the ones that generate plaque. Because of this, we need to have a contingency plan.

Basically, you need to have a temporary dental crown. Here in my Westland dental office, we have some good quality temporary dental crowns that we recommend. My professional assistants and I would be involved in the preparation of these crowns.

I start by using a mold to make an impression of the affected tooth and the tooth opposite it. We want to create a situation where both crowns are the right length so you can bite without a problem. We know you like to eat so we don't want to make you suffer by stopping you from enjoying your favorite foods. giving you the confidence to chew with abandon.

I would then pour the material into the mold, providing for a perfect fit. From there, I use a cement that has very strong adhesive properties yet can be removed easily. I use this to glue to temporary crown to the tooth.

While I did say you can eat with confidence, I would suggest avoiding tough vegetables such as carrots and certain fruits. You should also stay away from ribs, steaks and other thick meats while your temporary crown is still in your mouth. After all, it is still a temporary crown. If anything goes wrong, a temporary crown won't protect your tooth like a permanent one.
